Bondini and the Rafiki Club
The Bondini Project was started in 2008 to deal with another problem that had arisen in Gilgil - second generation street kids. Some of the first AIDS orphans have grown up on the street, and now have children of their own. Many of them live in an area called Bondini (which is Gilgil's red light district) and try to support their children by prostitution of selling 'Changaa' - an illegal moonshine. The infants often went hungry, and their mothers would give them alcohol to keep them quiet when there was no food.

So the Bondini nursery was set up - mainly as an excuse to ensure the children got at least one meal a day. Like Saidia, it started out in a near derelict shed, but we have now bought land and erected our own building, where up to 80 children are looked after and fed every day.

As a spin off from Bondini, Teresa has established the "Rafiki Club" to work with the young mothers of the Bondini Project. Run along the same lines as the Granny Club, Rafiki helps these young mothers to build their self-esteem and confidence in a shared, safe place from which they can start to explore other options to support their children and families.
